As a work of art itself, the staircase demonstrates Mr. Paine’s love and appreciation for wood carving, as well as his excellent attention to detail. The staircase was carved by the studio of Alois Lang, a Bavarian master carver in Michigan. Nathan had oak panels from the Paine Lumber Company sent off to Lang’s studio. The panels are entirely hand carved and took ten months to create. Since there are three distinct styles of acorns and oak leaves, we believe that there were three carvers on this project.
