The Library

The library was intended as a place for Nathan to study and bring guests. Can you imagine him and other men talking politics of the day while enjoying cigars together in this room? The library’s old-fashioned style makes it easy to imagine this kind of a scene today. However, some of the décor was already considered antique during the Paines’ lifetimes.

Nathan and Jessie did this on purpose. The furniture in the library was custom-built and upholstered with fabric antique for its time, thus coordinating with the room’s seventeenth-century theme.

Before you leave the library, can you find with your eyes a secret door? To the left of the high-backed sofa, the walnut paneling blends a door into the wall. We don’t open this door in order to preserve the structure, but you’ll see where it leads to soon.
