Main Gallery and Art Collection

Nathan and Jessie were passionate art collectors. The Main Gallery space was always intended to be a public art gallery. The Paines’ art collection features French Barbizon and American landscape paintings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Paines also featured local art - a considerable collection of sculptures by Oshkosh artist Helen Farnsworth Mears is on view on the second floor.

The Main Gallery spares no security detail. The mansion itself is fireproof, and the Main Gallery features steel-plated doors made of Macassar Ebony. This extra precaution ensured the safety of the artwork. We assume Nathan had a large focus on building a fireproof structure since the city of Oshkosh endured many fires.
