The story of the Paine Art Center and Gardens centers around Nathan and Jessie Paine. Nathan and Jessie were married in 1896 when they were in their late twenties. Their wedding was likely the social event of the century in the Fox Valley, as it brought together two of the most prominent families in the region.
Nathan’s grandfather, Edward L. Paine, founded the Paine Lumber Company in 1853. By the time Nathan became the company’s president in 1917, it was the world’s largest producer of doors and window sashes. The Paine Lumber Company operated until the early 1980s.
Jessie was the daughter of John A. Kimberly, co-founder of Kimberly-Clark Corporation, which is still in operation today.
